Introducing Fremont Chiropractor Dr. Steve Abercrombie

“I admit, when I was first adjusted, I was a little nervous” remembers Dr. Steve Abercrombie, D.C., “But I had such neck and shoulder pain from playing football in high school I was willing to try anything, even chiropractic. I was reluctant, but to humor my parents I made an appointment to see Dr. Brett Decaesare, the local chiropractor.”

“It was incredible,” continues Dr. Abercrombie. “I’ll never forget that first adjustment. And after the second adjustment my pain that I had been experiencing was almost gone. It was as if the pain never existed, and I could play football again. After experiencing the results during my first chiropractic adjustment, I knew I had to be a chiropractor. It was that simple.”

In my practice, I want to connect with my patients and slowly have them understand how they got the way they did, and the possibilities that exist when their problems and the problems of their friends and loved ones go ignored. My philosophy about my practice has always been, 'start with chiropractic first'. If we find that your problem is unrelated to chiropractic we do not hesitate to refer you to the appropriate specialist. We believe in interdisciplinary management between chiropractors and medical specialists. Our treatment is safe, effective and without the unwanted side effects of medication. The truth is, medication is sometimes needed, but our goal would be to minimize the need for medication while increasing function and decreasing pain. Patients who come in with an open mind, ready to work and follow directions do the best in our office. We expect our patients to participate in their recovery and understand that it is their body, and they are responsible for their outcomes. Many times it is really what they do the other 23.5 hours of the day that seems to make the real difference in recovery.

Our philosophy is start slow, be specific, be focused and be present. We know that we can always intensify treatment, but we can never take it back. Chiropractic is effective no matter what the age of the spine is. New or old, the response to treatment never seems to amaze me. I do have a soft spot for treating children. I see so many kids suffering from back pain or other ailments needlessly and their lives are extremely affected by it. I am happy to say we have changed the lives of many kids and that I feel the most rewarded after doing so.

Dr. Abercrombie began his pre-chiropractic education at Fresno State, where he studied the basic sciences such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, along with basic physiology and anatomy courses. After completing his study there, he was accepted at Life Chiropractic College West, in Hayward, Ca. During his four years at Life, courses included biochemistry, a major emphasis on anatomy and human physiology, X-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care in the Life Chiropractic College Health Center. After graduating in 2002, Dr. Abercrombie stayed in the bay area to establish his practice in Fremont.

I chose to go to Life Chiropractic College West because of advance education, the high quality of instructors they offered, and the proximity to family. I expected school to be difficult, which it was, but I was very surprised how they were able to explain how simple dysfunctions of the spine could effect other systems of the body, leading to chronic pain and disability. Once there, I knew I had made the right decision.

“We love skeptics,” smiles Dr. Abercrombie. “I still remember the concerns and apprehension I had when I went to the chiropractor for the first time. So we make it a point to make all our patients comfortable, explain everything in advance, answer questions and attempt to over communicate. Patients appreciate that.”

Dr. Abercrombie is married to his beautiful wife Gina who is a registered nurse and performs cosmetic laser procedures and injections for those in an active challenge against the aging process. They reside in Pleasanton, Ca. and have two beautiful and bright children, Jaxon and Kadence.

The beautiful Abercrombie Family.

When we began this practice, my wife, Gina and I both agreed that our family would come first. We have spent lots of time with each other and the kids. Our kids are beautiful and very bright. Jaxon is 7 years old, is in first grade and loves his Nintendo D.S. and baseball. Kadence is 3 years old, runs the house, and loves to dance and dress up. When I get a chance, I love to golf. I have figured out that it is the only thing that stops my mind from talking all the time. When I am done, I feel at peace, accomplished, and ready to move in a forward direction. My other passion, or should I say weakness, is cars. I never met a nice car I didn't like. My father-in-law teases me about it and reminds me that I have had almost twice as many cars as him and he is twice my age. I have noticed that he is catching up to me lately. I must be rubbing off on him.

I receive weekly chiropractic adjustments. I just feel healthier and less stressed when I am well adjusted. I do feel my best when I have my diet dialed in, but like many, my hand slips off the dial once or twice and a while. I do put a lot of emphasis on breathing, focusing and visualizing my life. I find that when I can do this, I am much better at everything I do. Obviously, as a chiropractor we would like everyone to minimize or eliminate the use of medication. We cannot deny that medicine has had some big wins and has saved lots of lives. What I do wish for is that people understand how to use medication. To many rely on it as a quick fix or a crutch. For instance, pain medication is designed to help you manage your pain while you are actively attempting to rehabilitate you physical ailment or address the cause of the problem. Too many take it thinking it is going to fix their problem and end up chemically needing the medication to function. Our goal to to educate these people, so that they can make a better choice about their treatment options.

If you are visiting this website, chances are, you either stumbled across it or were referred to it because you are in pain and would like some help. But, you are scared! You are either scared of the chiropractic adjustment (like I was) or you are scared that once you go, you will have to go every day for the rest of your life. I hear that one a lot. I am aware of both of these fears, and have made a promise to minimize both of them. In our office, we like to treat our patients like we would like to be treated. Tell me what is wrong and tell me what I need to do to fix it and to keep it fixed. Our examinations are thorough, and our recommendations straightforward. If you have been in pain as long as I am guessing you have, guess what? It is time to get off of the POT! You can download our new patient paperwork and bring it in to your first visit. If you can just manage to call and get yourself here, we can handle the rest. Good Luck.

Thank you for visiting our site. I hope it can be a source of hope and healing. If you have any questions, please call me or use the 'Email the Doctor' link at the bottom of every page.

Dr. Abercrombie Asks some important questions of interest to Fremont residents - Chiropractor Fremont Dr. Abercrombie Asks...

Why does chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works because your nervous system, consisting of your brain, spinal cord and all the nerves of your body, controls and regulates every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. A chiropractor locates and reduces areas of nervous system compromise (usually along the spine) so your capacity to heal is restored. Chiropractic works by helping your body work as it was designed.
Where do most Fremont residents get their first vertebral subluxation?
Being born in a hospital is a common source of vertebral subluxation. Trauma from forceps delivery has been replaced with drugs, vacuum extraction, Cesarean section and births that are "scheduled" to fit the workweek routines of Ob-Gyns. That's why we recommend a chiropractic checkup for every Fremont newborn.
